Jermaine Jenas believes Manchester United should sign Jan Vertonghen this summer, describing the Belgian as "the best free transfer centre-half out there".
Vertonghen confirmed his exit from Tottenham after eight years of service following Spurs' 1-1 draw with Crystal Palace on Sunday.
The Belgium defender – who can play at centre-back or left-back – boasts a wealth of experience with 232 Premier League appearances and 118 international caps.
Now a free agent, the 33-year-old is likely to attract a great deal of interest and is already linked with Manchester City and Everton.
And ex-Spurs midfielder Jenas claims United should also join the race for his former teammate, insisting he would make the ideal partner for Harry Maguire.
Jenas told BBC Radio 5 Live : "I keep touting him around everywhere but I’m sorry, Jan Vertonghen on a free is the best free transfer centre-half out there.
"If you can get Harry Maguire back on the right side and get an actual ball-playing centre-half as a left-sider, that little dynamic may change things for them as well and he’s free.
" Manchester United will know what they’re doing, they’ll have a plan but defensively they’re miles off it. I know how good he is.
"It baffles me when I see him in the stand every week because I know how good he this player is. I’ve played with him, I’ve watched him and on a free transfer, it just makes sense."
Maguire operated on the left of the centre-back pairing for Leicester and has continued to do so since his world-record £80million move to United last summer, despite being right-footed.
Current partner Victor Lindelof lines up on the right, but United are understood to be targeting centre-back as an area for improvement.
The Red Devils are linked with Napoli's Kalidou Koulibaly and Inter Milan's Milan Skriniar.
