Manchester United are on the verge of completing a £40million deal to sign Donny van de Beek from Ajax.
Van de Beek has been attracting interest from Real Madrid and Barcelona this summer, with both clubs reportedly keen on bringing him to Spain.
However, it was United’s Premier League rivals Tottenham who recently emerged as leading contenders to prise him away from Ajax.
Jose Mourinho is said to have been plotting a late move for the Dutchman as he attempts to strengthen his Spurs midfield ahead of the new season.
Yet according to The Mirror , Mourinho is set to lose out to former club United.
Van de Beek will reportedly arrive at Old Trafford in a switch worth £40million over the next few days, having been identified as a top transfer target by Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.
Nevertheless, the Red Devils’ chief negotiator Matt Judge is believed to have got the deal over the line after reach an agreement with the player on Sunday.
Judge was made aware of Spurs’ attempt to hijack the transfer and therefore moved in to agree personal terms with Van de Beek.
The 23-year-old has put pen to paper on a five-year deal at United, which includes the option of a further 12 months.
And he is understood to have told friends in Amsterdam that Solskjaer’s determination to sign him proved decisive.

Van de Beek was impressed with the United manager, who explained his vision for the club after finishing third in the Premier League season to seal a return to the Champions League.
The Red Devils, who have been monitoring him for the best part of a year, are now poised to take advantage of their close links with former goalkeeper and Ajax chief executive Edwin van der Sar.
