Manchester United have confirmed the arrival of Edinson Cavani on a free transfer.
The 33-year-old Uruguay striker, who has been without a club since his contract at Paris Saint-Germain expired at the end of June, completed a medical with the Red Devils on Sunday, the same day Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s men were thumped 6-1 at home to Tottenham.
Cavani, PSG’s all-time record scorer with 200 goals in 301 appearances for the Ligue 1 champions, has put pen to paper on a one-year contract at Old Trafford, with an option to extend for a further 12 months.
Solskjaer identified Jadon Sancho as his number one target at the start of the summer transfer window but United were forced to look elsewhere for attacking reinforcements as Borussia Dortmund held firm with their £108million asking price for the 20-year-old England winger.
Reports at the weekend claimed Cavani was so desperate to make an impression and hit the ground running that he asked to make his debut in United’s loss to Spurs.
The veteran forward scored just seven goals in all competitions for PSG last season which was his worst return since the 2007/08 season when he was playing for Palermo.
A falling out with Neymar meant Cavani left the French outfit under a cloud and the Uruguay international is determined to prove he still has the quality to perform at the highest level.
