Mauricio Pochettino backed to choose Manchester United job over rivals Manchester City

Mauricio Pochettino would prefer to become Manchester United manager ahead of rivals Manchester City, reckons Rangers legend Ally McCoist. Pochettino has been without a managerial job since being sacked by Tottenham in November 2018. The Argentine has long been linked with the United job, dating back to before Jose Mourinho’s appointment in 2016.

Pochettino remains the favourite to replace Ole Gunnar Solskjaer if he were to be sacked.

However, reports in recent days claim City are also eyeing Pochettino as a potential replacement for Pep Guardiola when the Spaniard leaves the Etihad.

But when asked which club he thinks Pochettino would prefer to take over at, McCoist chose United.

“United, I think,” McCoist said on talkSPORT.

“It’s a bit like Spurs where they probably haven’t won anything for a long, long time in terms of the league. I think that would maybe appeal to him a lot more.

“You look at a club like Manchester United who I don’t think would be too far away to say they’ve lost their way since Sir Alex Ferguson left.

“Clearly they’ve won things, that’s for sure. But a club like Man United, if you speak to boys like Gary Neville and Roy Keane they should be up challenging for the title most years, if not all the time.

“They haven’t been doing that. So I think there’s probably more work to do maybe at Manchester United than perhaps Manchester City.

“I think that would maybe slightly appeal more to a coach like Mauricio Pochettino more.

“If you’re sitting back looking at it then maybe the greater achievement would be winning the title with Manchester United as City have certainly done it recently.”

Meanwhile, former United striker Alan Brazil has described Pochettino as the perfect replacement for Solskjaer.

Brazil said: “Pochettino is still there, and you just look at his CV, it’s fantastic.

“If they had to make an appointment and say ‘see ya later’ to Ole, he’d be perfect for Manchester United.

“I’d like to see [Solskjaer] do well, I really would, but the stats don’t lie and now he’s really up against it.

“Is he buying the players now? I’m not 100 per cent if he is. If he is, why is he not buying in defenders to stop that rot? You can’t keep giving goals away like that, it’s an absolute joke.

“So they’re back to square one as far as I’m concerned.”
