Mikel Arteta given Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang solution after defeat by Liverpool

Mikel Arteta has been urged to play Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang as a central striker.

The Arsenal captain produced an underwhelming performance on the wing as the Gunners were beaten 3-1 by Premier League champions Liverpool on Monday night.

That lacklustre showing has led to question marks over Aubameyang's best position, despite the striker scoring 22 times from the same position last year.

The fact Alexandre Lacazette fluffed his lines in the central role against Liverpool has further strengthened the belief that the former Borussia Dortmund star should lead the line.

And former England star Owen Hargreaves has demanded Arteta to prioritise Aubameyang.

"Maybe drop Lacazette, play Aubameyang at the top, [Bukayo] Saka can play as an attacker, [and] as a wing-back," Hargreaves told Premier League Productions.

Arsenal's squad may have a very different look to it this time next week, with the summer transfer window closing on Monday.

Several big names have been linked with a move to the Premier League club, including Lyon star Houssem Aouar and Thomas Partey.

At least one of those players is expected to make a switch to the Emirates, and Hargreaves feels the Gunners need to strengthen their squad.

"They didn’t have much possession Arsenal and I just thought they were a bit light in the centre of the park," he added.

"Elneny and Xhaka, I don’t think that works against Liverpool and that’s probably why they’re trying to address the centre of the park, whether that’s [Thomas] Partey or Aouar, I think they need somebody in there."

Arsenal and Liverpool meet for the second time in a week in the League Cup on Thursday.
