Mikel Arteta says he is open to having Santi Cazorla back at Arsenal following the midfielder’s decision to join Qatari side Al-Sadd.
Cazorla played his final game for Villarreal on Sunday evening and was given a guard of honour as he left the pitch after the full-time whistle.
On Monday, Doha-based side Al-Sadd, who are managed by former Barcelona and Spain midfielder Xavi, announced that they have reached an agreement to sign Cazorla as a free agent.
In May, Cazorla admitted that he was open to returning to Arsenal as part of Arteta’s backroom staff.
And Arteta, who won two FA Cup trophies alongside Cazorla at Arsenal, says he would welcome his former teammate back at the club.
‘My opinion of Santi cannot be any higher,’ said Arteta.
‘Personally, first, with the type of person he is and what he brings to that dressing room, but then also as a player for what he did throughout his career.
‘About the coaching role and the future, we will see what happens.
‘Right now, he’s just finished [with Villarreal] so let him enjoy that moment and we’ll see what happens in the future.’
