Arsenal fans are reeling from the news that Houssem Aouar and Thomas Partey now look unlikely to join before the transfer deadline.
And it doesn't look like the answer to Mikel Arteta 's midfield problems is already be sat in the Emirates dressing room.
Mohamed Elneny's time at Arsenal looked all-but over after the Egyptian was shipped out on loan to Besiktas.
But since being given a shock starting role in the season opener against Fulham, the central midfielder has gone clearly impressed Arteta.
Elneny was labelled 'phenomenal' that day by Arteta and was at the heart of today's win over Sheffield United at the Emirates Stadium.
But if Arsenal want to have aspirations of challenging this season, the 28-year-old can't be finding himself in the starting line-up week in, week out.
Dani Ceballos played alongside Elneny this afternoon, while Granit Xhaka dropped out.
Those three options alone don't provide much confidence that a title-challenge is possible without new additions.
Arsenal fans will surely be happy with Elneny's start to the season – and he is a good rotation option to have.
But the former Basel man is apprehensive to go forward, opting for safe, sideways passes the majority of the time.
Ceballos provided most of the forward passes this afternoon, along with Hector Bellerin and Kieran Tierney down the flanks.
But a player like Aouar or Partey would provide that much-needed wow factor.
The former has excelled at Lyon, adding goals and assists to his immense passing game.
While Partey is seen as an all-rounder at Atletico, proving an ever-present in Diego Simeone's side.
For now though, both men appear to be staying put – despite Arsenal tracking the duo all summer.
Chelsea's Jorginho has also been linked with a move across London.

Elneny though, is happy at Arsenal under Arteta.
"He speaks to me always, saying things like ‘we need you on the team’ and he is always giving me good feedback and always pushing me to get the best from me.
"I’m really happy to be here. ‘I’ll give 100% every day in the training and if they give me a chance to play, I will always give 100 per cent.
"Because it’s the best for me, to play always in regular games and to give 100 per cent to the team, to help the team to win and make sure that we’re going to build a team to be strong in the Premier League."
