Mourinho’s warning to Spurs transfer targets unwilling to take Kane challenge

Jose Mourinho has maintained any striker scared to join Spurs because of Harry Kane is not good enough for the club anyway.

The north Londoners, who face Everton on Sunday, are stepping up their hunt for more firepower after injuries to Kane and Son Heung Min cost them dear last season.

Red Bull Salzburg striker Patson Daka, 21, has become the latest player to snub a move to Spurs after scoring 27 goals last season.

But Mourinho said: “The point is not me convincing the striker is the striker convincing me.

"And if the striker is afraid to come to Tottenham, and the striker is afraid of competition then I don't want a striker.

“If he says I don't want to go because I don't want to be in a squad where we have Harry Kane, Son, Lamela, Lucas Moura then, goodbye.”

Spurs crashed out of the Champions League, the FA Cup and the top four last season as they tried to compete without their top frontmen.

Mourinho moved to allay the fears of fans concerned that they could be facing a case of deja vu going into the new campaign.

“Yes, I want, I need a striker,” he added. “The club know that I want a striker and they want a striker. Are we going to get one? I believe so. For the balance of the squad, we need it.

“Are we going to get one? I believe so, I honestly believe so.”

Mourinho also confirmed Italian club Genoa are in talks with the club to sign left-back Danny Rose following the England defender’s well-documented bust-up with the Portuguese, highlighted in the All Or Nothing documentary.

The Spurs boss added: "If Genoa gets Danny Rose I think they get a good player.

"We've got Ben Davies, Ryan Sessegnon and investment that we want to improve, so it will be tough for him.

"If he goes to Genoa and Serie A then that's very good for him.”

Likely Spurs XI vs Everton: Lloris, Doherty, Alderweireld, Dier, Davies, Sissoko, Winks, Son, Alli, Bergwijn, Kane.
