Nemanja Matic cut through the gloom around Manchester United's transfer window by insisting the club have signed “quality players”.
United fans were left dismayed at the club's activity in the transfer market this summer, particularly with the failed pursuit of No.1 target Jadon Sancho.
The Reds made five signings in the window – midfielder Donny van de Beek, left-back Alex Telles, forward Edinson Cavani and 18-year-old wingers Facundo Pellistri and Amad Diallo.
But those arrivals failed to satisfy the majority of United fans, who felt the club needed to sign bigger names to be more competitive in the Premier League and Champions League this season.
Midfielder Matic, however, put a positive spin on the five new faces and said he hoped the additions to Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's squad can help United land a trophy.
United have not won anything for three years and Matic said: “It's always good when we have additions to the team.
“We’ve signed quality players, so we will see what they can bring to our team.
“We're happy to see them. Hopefully they can fit very well in our team and they can win some trophies with us.”
Cavani was a controversial signing for United, the striker having been a free agent for three months, but only signed by the Reds late on deadline day.

That smacked of desperation, but Matic hailed Cavani's enduring quality and backed the 33-year-old to continue his formidable goalscoring form for United.
"I played against him a few times," said Matic. "A great player, a great player.
"Very experienced. He scores goals, always. So I hope he will continue to do the same job for us.
"We're always excited to see somebody come in and, of course, it's always good to see new faces in the team, especially when we sign the quality players like we did. So I'm happy."
