Southgate had private calls with shamed England trio who flouted Covid-19 rules

Gareth Southgate is expected to welcome his Covidiots back into the England fold following showdown talks with the shamed trio.

Tammy Abraham, Jadon Sancho and Ben Chilwell were all blocked from joining the squad at St George's Park on Monday after breaking lockdown rules last weekend.

The trio were photographed attending Abraham's 23rd birthday party, contravening Government rules stating no more than six people can mix together at any one time.

The FA have launched an investigation and all three will miss tomorrow night's international friendly with Wales at Wembley.

Southgate rang the players to demand an explanation as to why they brought more shame on the Three Lions squad.

A seething Southgate contacted them individually to discuss the incident in a bid to find out what their thinking was behind their decision to ignore the rules.

It is understood Southgate is prepared to allow them back to the squad's HQ and will consider them for selection ahead of the Nations League games with Belgium and Denmark – provided the test results come back negative.

Southgate laid down the law to his squad at their welcome meeting on Monday, reminding them of their responsibilities when representing England.

Southgate and his coaching staff had considered throwing them out of the squad altogether, but he has taken into account the fact Abraham had no idea the surprise party had been organised and that it also took place before the three were on international duty.

England newcomer Dominic Calvert-Lewin admits Southgate has made it clear what is expected of them and the Everton striker said: "We had a welcome meeting and he just reminded us what it means – and the expectations of playing for England.
