Trainers Mick Price and Michael Kent Jr will again be out to make light of sharp class rises with three runners in Saturday’s Group 2 Edward Manifold Stakes (1600m) at Flemington.
Price and Kent took Night Raid from a Tatura maiden win to victory in the Listed Atlantic Jewel Stakes last month while Odeum won a stakes race at Caulfield two starts after a Moe maiden win.
Price took Badawiya from a Benchmark 64 race to win the Manifold Stakes in 2015 while Gallica won the event for the Caulfield trainer in 2008 after jumping from Rating 68 grade.
The pair has last-start maiden winner Miss Guggenheim and Selfless in the Edward Manifold Stakes while Benchmark 70 winner Café Rizu is the senior member of the stable’s team in the $300,000 race.
Kent Jr said the placement of the Edward Manifold Stakes a week before the Group 1 Thousand Guineas made the race attractive to lightly raced fillies.
“The better fillies either ran last week or are running next week in the (Thousand) Guineas, so it’s a nice opportunity to have a go with some progressive fillies in a big Group 2,” he said.

“I know it’s a Group 2 but it’s a race full of fillies that have just won their maiden and the stables obviously think highly of them, as do we.
“They’re three-year-old fillies so you’ve got to have a go at these races. You could always knock off a Benchmark 64 in the bush but you’ve got a Group 2 race worth $300,000 staring you in the face.”
Kent Jr said the stable’s impressive three-year-old ranks were the result of giving promising two-year-olds a bit more time to develop.
“When I first arrived at Mick’s last year, I kept up on the all the two-year-olds and kept saying to the boss, ‘gee, this one moves well or this one goes well’ but we didn’t have a huge two-year-old season,” he said.
“They were lovely horses but they just needed a bit of time. We gave them the time they needed and that is bearing fruit for our three-year-olds.
“Whether they didn’t make the Group racing as two-year-olds, they have been able to go and have the education to win a maiden then go to Group company and win again.”
TAB has Miss Guggenheim as the best of the stable’s chances at $7.50 in its early Edward Manifold Stakes betting. Cafe Rizu is a $19 chance ahead of Selfless at $23.
