Rob Heathcote was overjoyed with Rothfire proving he was the real deal but blasted the tactics of Hugh Bowman on Farnan as “insanity.”
Heathcote and Rothfire‘s owners watched the gelding’s Group II Run to the Rose win in a private room at Doomben and there were electric and emotional scenes when the Queensland gelding did the business.
“Gai, you may have the best three-year-old colt but I‘ve got a better gelding,” Heathcote declared, in the seconds after the race,’ in reference to how Gai Waterhouse declared Farnan would go through the spring unbeaten.
“We are not a pretender in The Everest now are we?”
However Heathcote didn‘t miss Bowman for his tactics on Farnan after the colt set a breakneck speed in front in the 1200m race at Rosehill.
Rothfire jumped to the lead clearly in the early stages before being taken on by Farnan who then scorched the turf and led by a long way.
Jim Byrne sat quiet on Rothfire before laying it down to Farnan who finished fifth, Rothfire holding off the rest of the chasing brigade by a length and a half.
“I can‘t believe what Bowman did – that was insanity,” Heathcote said.
“We won the start like he always does, bang, first out, why doesn‘t Bowman sit outside him?
“It doesn‘t make sense to me.”
Rothfire already has a slot in the $15million The Everest and he firmed from $11 to $8 while Farnan went the other way, drifting from $11 to $15.
Rothfire is now the dominant $2.80 favourite for the Group I Golden Rose, firming from $7 to $2.80.
