Stand-in skipper Ben Stokes says a touching message from England captain Joe Root was the ‘best piece of advice’ he has received as he prepares for the first Test against West Indies.
Stokes will become the 81st player to captain England’s Test team on Wednesday when the three-match series against Windies starts at the Ageas Bowl in Southampton.
The 29-year-old is standing in for the absent Root, who left England’s training bubble last week to attend the birth of his second child.
Root, who is expected to be back for the second match at Old Trafford, left a note on the hanger of Stokes’ captain’s blazer which read: “Do it your way”.
Asked to reveal the best piece of advice he has been given since it was confirmed he would captain the side, Stokes said: ‘I haven’t had much advice, although there’s been a lot of opinions flying around.
‘The best message I’ve received was when I got my photos done yesterday, with the blazer.
‘Rooty just left a message on the hanger which said: “Do it your way”.’
