SuperCoach Racing 2020: Five top contenders for The Metropolitan

The Metropolitan has been a graveyard race for favourites, which Mugatoo will need to overcome to continue his remarkable record in Australia.

Just two favourites have won the Group 1 2400m handicap for stayers in the past decade – Magic Hurricane in 2015 and Glencadam Gold in 2012.

The Kris Lees-trained Mugatoo is aiming to become the third and continue his unbeaten spring campaign.

Lees and Chris Waller appear to have a stranglehold on the race with a combined nine runners, which includes an emergency, in the 18-horse field (plus four emergencies).

Here are five of the top chances for The Metropolitan:

MUGATOO

SuperCoach price: $325,000

The import has won six of eight Australia starts but his latest in the Group 3 Newcastle Cup was most impressive. He may be six but the lightly-raced gelding is reaching his full potential. Drawn perfectly in barrier seven.

SHARED AMBITION

SuperCoach price: $325,000

A win in The Metrop would take the five-year-old import a step closer towards qualifying for the Melbourne Cup. A last-start second in the Kingston Town Stakes will have him ready to peak here but he again has to overcome a wide barrier.

BRIMHAM ROCKS

SuperCoach price: $300,000

Will it be third time lucky for this tough stayer? He narrowly missed out in the 2018 Metropolitan but was never a factor in last year’s race after settling too far back in the field. Although he no longer maintains the level of consistency he showed during the 2018 spring – where he notched four consecutive seconds and was so close to securing a Melbourne Cup start – he is still capable of winning on his day.

HUSH WRITER

SuperCoach price: $300,000

Won the Newcastle Cup and St Leger last spring but failed to fire in four starts during the autumn. The six-year-old gelding has rediscovered his form with a third in the Wyong Cup and second in the Newcastle Cup behind Mugatoo.

ZEBROWSKI

SuperCoach price: $250,000

The ATC Derby runner-up is the least experienced runner in the field but could have the most upside as a stayer. He stuck to his task in the Kingston Town Stakes when fourth after finding the 1400m and 1600m too sharp, and should stay the 2400m trip.
