Wimbledon 1985 final result: Who won Wimbledon 1985 final? Boris Becker vs Kevin Curren

Wimbledon was cancelled this year due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic. However, tennis fans can still relive some classic matches over the next two weeks, courtesy of the BBC.

The broadcaster holds the rights to the famous tournament in the UK.

But with no action this year, a series of classic Wimbledon programming will be aired in its place.

In 1985, Boris Becker burst onto the scene as an unknown 17-year-old.

He fought his way through the men’s draw to set up a clash with Kevin Curren in the final.

Who won the 1985 Wimbledon final?

The 1985 final was won by Becker in four sets.

The young German sealed the trophy with a 6–3, 6–7, 7–6, 6–4 victory over Curren.

In doing so, Becker became the first unseeded player and the first of his nationality to win the Wimbledon singles title.

He also became the youngest ever male Grand Slam singles champion but this record would later be broken by Michael Chang at the 1989 French Open.

Recalling his famous victory back in 2015, Becker told BBC Sport: “It was a very different emotion.

“I didn’t quite know what, I couldn’t grasp it, but I knew it was a life-changing moment.”

Also speaking on the 30th anniversary of the final, Curren told the Guardian the defeat to Becker was special memory, rather than a bitter one.

“He [Becker] always has a little dig at me about it,” said Curren.

“But it’s been a very special part of my life and the greatest tournament in tennis. I’m very grateful for the experiences I’ve had.”

How to re-watch the 1985 Wimbledon final

The classic final will be shown on BBC Two this afternoon.

Coverage will be presented by Clare Balding and runs from 1.30pm until 4.30pm.

Fans can also live stream the action via the iPlayer app and on the BBC website.

Christian Pulisic girlfriend: Who is the Chelsea star dating?

Christian Pulisic has been Chelsea’s standout performer since football’s resumption. The American scored in the Blues’ Premier League wins over Aston Villa and Manchester City, while putting in another impressive display in the FA Cup quarter-final victory at Leicester.

But while his talents on the pitch are clear, Chelsea fans are also keen to know about his life off the field.

Does Christian Pulisic have a girlfriend?

Pulisic has not disclosed his current relationship status, but many outlets report him to be single.

In an interview with Front Row Soccer in 2017, Pulisic’s father Mark revealed his son had not yet had a “serious girlfriend”.

Mark was responding to the media’s comparisons of Christian and USA football icon Landon Donovan.

“Landon Donovan is Landon Donovan, and he’ll always be remembered as Landon Donovan,” he said.

“Don’t put another name next to that. It’s not fair, it’s not right to do. That’s my opinion.

“My son is 18. To say he’s the best or going to be the best, it’s ridiculous.

“My son’s so young. He hasn’t had a serious girlfriend yet. Who knows how he’s going to react to that part of his life?

“Who knows how he’s going to react to his first major setback when he’s left out of a national team, when he’s left out of the first team? How he is going to come off an injury?”

During the coronavirus shutdown, Pulisic returned to his hometown of Hershey, Pennsylvania.

To keep himself entertained, the 21-year-old found himself using popular social media app TikTok, giving fans a better understanding of his personality.

“I’ve got on TikTok to help pass the day,” he said upon his return to Chelsea’s Cobham training ground in May.

“I’ve always liked dancing and doing fun things, other things aside from the game.

“I know some people might not like this sort of stuff but I really don’t care because I’m going to carry on doing it anyway!

“I think it gives people a chance to see me a little better.

“No one really knows who I am, they just see me as a footballer, so hopefully, it gives them a little insight into my character.”

Leicester vs Crystal Palace postponed: Will match go ahead amid local lockdown?

Leicester are scheduled to host Crystal Palace at the King Power Stadium on Saturday. But with the city of Leicester being put in a local lockdown following a coronavirus spike, there are serious doubts about whether the Premier League will go ahead.

Will Leicester vs Crystal Palace be postponed?

Premier League chief executive Richard Masters says contingency plans are in place if Leicester are unable to host Crystal Palace this weekend.

The game could be moved to a neutral venue but it’s also possible for it to be postponed.

“We have had a huge dialogue with the authorities about the concept of neutral venues,” Masters told MPs at a Digital, Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS) committee evidence session on Tuesday.

“If what is happening in Leicester – we’re waiting to hear – does affect the club’s ability to host home games – either the match on Saturday against Crystal Palace at 3pm – or subsequent matches, then we have the opportunity to put those matches elsewhere or postpone until a date when it is safe to do so.

“I’m yet to understand what the impact of the partial lockdown in Leicester is going to have on the club.

“But clearly it demonstrates the fragile project that we have on here. We can’t take it for granted.”

As it stands, the Premier League match is scheduled to go ahead.

The Safety Advisory Group, who make the final decision on where the match will take place, are scheduled to meet later this evening to discuss the matter.

Brendan Rogers, though, has remained relaxed about the situation.

The Leicester boss said: “Nothing has changed in terms of how we have been working thus far throughout this situation.

“I have always said we will react accordingly. We have to have agility in this period.

“I think in this moment in time we are in the safest place we can be in terms of our work, the stadium also.

“It is a very safe environment for the games to be in. We will just keep working until we are told otherwise.”

Anthony Martial transfer news: Could Martial leave Man Utd? Michael Owen drops bombshell

Anthony Martial is already having his best-ever season with Manchester United. The French forward has scored 19 goals in all competitions, overtaking the 17 he scored in his debut campaign with the Red Devils in 2015/16.

The 24-year-old also bagged his first career hat-trick in the recent 3-0 win over Sheffield United.

He said afterwards: “I feel very good. It’s my first hat-trick in my career, so I hope I will score more.

“I’m happy because the team played very good today so I think it’s good.”

He came off the bench in the second half to help United get past Norwich in the FA Cup quarter-finals and he is likely to be restored to the starting line-up against Brighton this evening.

Michael Owen, though, has questioned Martial’s role under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

Could Anthony Martial leave Man Utd?

Martial appears to be the Norwegian’s first choice to lead the line at Old Trafford but Owen has suggested the club may have to invest in a new striker.

“Now is the right time to be playing as a centre-forward for Man United, with the likes of Pogba, Fernandes and all these players around you,” the former United star told the Daily Mail.

“Is he one that’s going to be the No.9 for years to come? At the minute, he looks very inconsistent. Is he going to constantly score a lot of goals?

“There is still a question mark – and there is still a question mark over what his best position is.

“I probably think it’s off the left, but then again that’s probably Marcus Rashford’s best position.

“They are shuffling the pack a little bit at the moment but if you ask most people where Manchester United need to strengthen, they will say they need a main No.9.”

Solskjaer has also warned Martial that there are plenty of players both inside and outside the club who would be happy to take his position.

“We’ll keep challenging him,” Solskjaer said of the former Monaco star.

“There are always players in and around the team – and outside the club – who would want to be No. 9 for Manchester United.

“He’s playing with a smile on his face. Anthony has had a really good season, he’s been really important for us.

“We felt it during the couple of months he was out injured – we struggled.

“He knows that we trust him. He knows that we’ll have patience with him and that we’ll keep working with him.

Leeds vs Fulham live stream, TV channel: How to watch Championship match

Leeds boss Marcelo Bielsa has suggested the visit of Fulham could be the club’s most important game this season. Leeds are level with Championship leaders West Brom on 71 points but sit second in the table on goal difference.

Fulham are seven points behind in third as the race for promotion intensifies.

“The eight matches left are going to generate the same expectation until the situation is defined,” said Bielsa.

“Every match is important. This [match] has a more valuable meaning because we play with the direct and closest team to us to fight for promotion.”

Leeds return to Elland Road for the first time since the resumption, but minus the boisterous atmosphere.

Bielsa added: “Of course, playing without supporters is not the same as if you play with the fans. Playing home or away without fans also there is a difference there.

“The feeling I have is the obligation the home team has disappeared here, the home team is not forced to win because the fans are not there.

“On the other hand, this match is so important both teams are going to go for the match.”

Fulham boss Scott Parker understands the significance this match could have in the race for automatic promotion and has urged his players to close the gap on their rivals.

“They don’t come any bigger than Leeds away”, Parker said at a press conference.

“Every game for us this season has been a big game, and of course it becomes a little bit more important because of where the two sides are in the division.

“Leeds, for most of this season, have been one of the best teams. They’ve been at the top of the table for large parts.

“The last time we played them I think there was a 13 point gap, we managed to beat them at home and narrow that gap.

“We have chipped away and brought them back to us a little bit.

“And to think that if we go there at the weekend and get a result, against a very, very good team, we narrow that gap to four points.”

Also in action are Arsenal, who will be looking to build on the midweek win over Southampton after suffering back-to-back defeats upon the Premier League’s resumption.

The Gunners make the trip north to face Sheffield United as the Blades search for their first win since the restart.

There is also an intriguing FA Cup clash between the Premier League’s third and fourth clubs.

Fantasy Premier League tips: Best transfers for GW32+

Fantasy Premier League is back in full swing following the top-flight’s resumption. The next deadline arrives at 11.30am on Saturday, one hour before Aston Villa vs Wolves kicks off.

With fixture lists bunched tightly together, there is very little turnaround between game weeks, meaning FPL managers have to act quickly.

Manchester United’s Anthony Martial was the highest points scorer in GW31+.

The Frenchman bagged himself a hat trick against Sheffield United to collect an impressive 21 points.

His nearest challenger was Everton’s Michael Keane, who netted in the 1-0 win over Norwich to earn 15 points.

Here, Express Sport has rounded up some of the top transfer picks and bargain buys for GW32+.

ALSO SEE – Premier League prize money: How much do Liverpool win as champions?

Fantasy Premier League tips

GK: Nick Pope, Burnley (£5m)

Pope is the highest-scoring goalkeeper for FPL points this season, showing why he’s been such a popular choice.

No-one has kept more clean sheets than Pope’s 12, with his most recent coming in the 1-0 win over Watford in midweek.

He’ll be hoping to keep another one when the Clarets travel to Crystal Palace on Monday.

  • FPL double gameweeks: When are the FPL double gameweeks?

DEF: Jamaal Lascelles, Newcastle (£4.3m)

Lascelles was in a fine run of form either side of the coronavirus-enforced break and at just £4.3m, he could prove to be useful bargain defender for your squad.

He followed up consecutive clean sheets with another one in the 3-0 win over Sheffield United upon the league’s resumption.

The streak ended in the last gameweek but with fixtures against Bournemouth (GW32+) and West Ham (GW33+) to come, he could start up a new run.

MID: Anthony Martial, Man Utd (£8.1m)

The fact that Martial is categorised as a midfielder in FPL gives him huge value as managers can effectively fit another striker into their line-ups.

His recent hat-trick wasn’t necessarily an out-of-the-blue occurrence either as the 24-year-old had scored three in his last four before the stoppage.

With Brighton to come in GW32+ and games against Bournemouth and Aston Villa on the horizon, it’s no surprise the United star is the player most-transferred in this week.

Wolves take on a struggling Villa side this week.
